St. Nicholas and
The First Christmas Stocking

Nicholas was a kindly man born in the
fourth century. Because he devoted his life
to helping others and doing good deeds, he
became a bishop at a young age. One year at
Christmastime, Nicholas was told of a poor
villager whose wife had died. The man was so
grief-stricken that he was unable to care for
his three daughters. When Nicholas heard of
their desperate situation, he rode past their
humble cottage and tossed three bags of
gold through their window. The gold scattered
and landed in the girls’ stockings that were
hung by the chimney to dry. ‘This is a miracle,”
cried the eldest daughter. “Now we will be able
to buy food and wood
and nurse our father back to health.”
Once this story was heard across the land,
the custom evolved of children hanging stockings
by the chimney, in hopes that St. Nicholas
would bring them happy Christmas surprises.

The Legend of the
CHRISTMAS WREATH

On the holiest of nights in Bethlehem,
a young girl named Sarah, who worked
in the inn, longed to honor the Christ Child
with a gift. Having no money, she wandered
through the fields at sunrise in search of
fragrant grasses. She gathered wild thyme
for courage and sweet woodruff, symbolizing
everlasting life. She then wove them together
in a circle with olive branches, representing
peace, and flowering sainfoin – the same
sweet hay that filled the Baby’s manger.

Sarah shyly placed her humble creation
besides the treasures of gold and frankincense
and myrrh. This sweet, fragrant circle, made by
hand from the gifts of nature, touched the
hears of Mary and Joseph and made the
Baby Jesus smile.

It was a wreath of blessing…
and forever after, a beloved symbol of the
never-ending joy of the first Christmas.

The Legend of
THE SHEPHERD BOY

The shepherd boy was very poor,
he had no gold to bring,
but there was one thing he might give
to Christ, the Newborn King.

Inspired by love, he brought a gift
he treasured more than gold–
a little lamb he’d found
without a mother, lost and cold.

The boy held up his heart’s delight
before the Holy Child
and at the sight of such a gift,
the Baby Jesus smiled.

Oh, there were gleaming treasures
meant to bring the infant joy…
but none as perfect as the lamb
brought by the shepherd boy.

The Legend of the
CHRISTMAS STAR

The time was fast approaching for the birth
of the Baby Jesus. Wise men from the east
knew that the prophecy of the long-awaited
Savior was about to be fulfilled and they
prayed for a sign that would lead them
to that holy place.

High above, a band of angels heard their
prayers and flew among the stars of the
Sky of Heaven to choose the brightest star
of all–the one that would shine with
the glory of the Lord Himself–and they
fixed it above the town of Bethlehem.

And so i was that the Star was seen by
wise men in faraway lands who followed its
light to the humble stable and the Holy Child.

And now, after more than 2000 years, that
same Star still shines brightly in our hearts.
For it is the Star of wonder and of hope.
It is the Star of believing.

DOVE

The Child was only a few hours old
but already the Wise Men had come.
Led by a star, bringing great treasures
the baby Jesus looked in wonder
at the gold and frankincense and myrrh.
But He seemed to know that something
even greater than was in store.
And then it happened. A Dove as white
as starlight flew into the stable,
bringing an olive branch. It was then
that the Baby smiled His first smile.
And He reached up and took
the green branch from the dove.
It was the gift He had been waiting for.
It was the reason He had been sent
into this world. For the olive branch is
the symbol of the hopes and fears of
all the yeas, the promise and the dream
of peace on earth.

The Legend of
THE WHITE
CHRISTMAS ROSE

a poor servant girl from the inn
watched as a beautiful angel
appeared in the humble stable.
Three kings gave their wondrous gifts
to the Christ Child.

The girl was so sad that she had
nothing to give that she began to cry.
When her tears touched the ground
miraculous white blossoms sprang up
and the Angel gathered up
the snow white roses.
In delight, the newborn Child
reached out towards the flowers
and smiled.

And so the white Christmas rose
has become a symbol of
that first Christmas day
when Christ was born in Bethlehem.

The Legend of the Christmas Tree

How bright you are, O little tree!
How proud you stand for all to see…
Your slender branches, sparkle-bright,
Recall that wondrous, holy night
When Jesus came amidst the cold,
As ancient prophets had foretold.
And kings and wise men all adored
The tiny Babe who was the Lord.

While close to where the Babe was born,
There stood a fir tree, all forlorn.
Its branches were all brown and bare,
No shelter from the cold night air.
It was ashamed to be so brown,
But then a thousand stars looked down
And showered the tree with radiant light…
Renewed its branches on that night.
And Baby Jesus, meek and mild,
Looked at the tree and then He smiled.
