THE STORY OF ST. FRANCIS
AND THE CHRISTMAS CRECHE

On Christmas Eve in 1223,
St Francis of Assisi quietly transformed
a cave outside the Italian town of Greccio.
As villagers celebrated in the town square,
they noticed a light glowing on the hillside.
Setting out to investigate, they discovered the cave.
Torchlight flickered. Animals shuffled softly.
A lullaby echoed in the stillness.
Travel-worn kings and humble shepherds
knelt alongside ta young couple,
gazing with love at a wooden manger.
There, in the middle of it all,
a baby sighed peacefully in the sweet hay.
A Hush came over the crowd.
The revelers fell to their knees and wept,
for no one had ever seen such a sight.
Before them was a living reminder
of the real reason for celebration.
From that night on, people began
to make a nativity scene, a creche, of their own.
And now, as then, those who look
will find a tiny baby, the newborn King of Peace,
at the center of every creche,
at the heart of every Christmas.
