The Legend of Mary’s Blue Robe

The road was filled with travelers when Mary
and Joseph set out for Bethlehem to be taxed.
They went more slowly than most, since
Mary was heavy with child.
The innkeeper’s wife felt sorry for the dusty,
tired couple, but the best she could offer them
was a night in the stable.  “we have no more blankets,
but you may have the one from my bed—
and I’ll wash your robe for you,”
she told the young mother-to-be.
Sometime in the night, the innkeeper’s wife woke.
Hearing voices outside she made her way to the stable.
To her surprise, the baby had already come
and was sleeping in the manger,
surrounded by shepherds who knelt watching him.
“I’ll fetch your robe,” she told Mary.
“for I hung it near the fire to dry.”
But the rough, homespun garment
was nowhere to be found.  In its place hung
a robe of such a rich blue and exquisite softness
it appeared to be cut from the heavens!
When the innkeepers’s wife brought Mary
the robe, everyone marveled, “Truly, it has been
a night for miracles,” one of the shepherds said.
And as they all gazed once more
at the greatest Miracle of all,
the carpenter’s wife was dressed
to receive not only shepherds but kings.
