THE LEGEND OF
THE
Nutcracker

Years ago, in Germany, there was a wealthy
but reclusive farmer who lived in a grove of walnut trees.
One day, frustrated that he had no good way
to open his many walnuts,
the farmer decided to sponsor a contest.
Whoever invented the best device
to shell walnuts would win a prize.
A humble puppeteer came forward
with a brightly painted puppet
whose large mouth and strong jaws
could crack nuts with ease.
When he saw the whimsical creation,
something softened in the farmer.
He not only declared the puppeteer the winner
but also built him his very own workshop,
and the two men became lifelong friends.
In time, the nutcracker puppets became known the world over,
but the very first nutcracker opened something far greater
than walnuts —it opened a man’s heart.

NOTE:

Don and Adele Hall sent the first
Ornament Card in 1974, beginning
a fifty-year tradition that reflected
their love for Hallmark’s people,
products, and purpose. Understanding
the universal need for connection,
they found great joy in selecting
and sending each card, with each
one sharing a unique story.
