The Legend of the Christmas Tree

How bright you are, O little tree!
How proud you stand for all to see…
Your slender branches, sparkle-bright,
Recall that wondrous, holy night
When Jesus came amidst the cold,
As ancient prophets had foretold.
And kings and wise men all adored
The tiny Babe who was the Lord.

While close to where the Babe was born,
There stood a fir tree, all forlorn.
Its branches were all brown and bare,
No shelter from the cold night air.
It was ashamed to be so brown,
But then a thousand stars looked down
And showered the tree with radiant light…
Renewed its branches on that night.
And Baby Jesus, meek and mild,
Looked at the tree and then He smiled.
