DATE OF STATEHOOD VIRGINIA

June 25, 1788

Virginia, the site is some of the most important events in American history, has several nicknames. The state’s most well known nickname is the “Old Dominion.” King Charles II gave the state this name because it remained loyal to England during the English Civil War in the mid-1600s. It is also known as the “Mother of States,” since all or part of eight other states were formed from the western territory once claimed by Virginia – Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

VIRGINIA FACTS AT A GLANCE

Capitol: Richmond
Population estimate (1998): 6,791,345
Size: 40,598 square miles
