
50 STATE QUARTERS™ In a unique celebration of history and national pride, the United States Mint in 1999 began the 50 State Quarters Program. Each year the Mint will issue five new commemorative quarters honoring each of the 50 states in the order they entered the Union. These special quarters will be minted both in Philadelphia and Denver. On the coins’ reverse will be unique designs central to each state’s heritage. Hallmark American Spirit Collection ornaments will be offered for all five state quarters issued by the Mint in 1999. These include Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. GEORGIA QUARTER Issued July 1999 The Georgia quarter dollar prominently features a peach, the official fruit of Georgia, within the silhouette outline of the state. The quarter is the fourth issued by the United States Mint in its 50 State Quarters Program. The central design is bordered in live oak sprigs, symbolic of the state tree. Draped across the top of the design is a banner bearing the state motto, “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation.” The first-strike ceremony for the Georgia quarter was held on July 19, 1999 at the State House in Atlanta. Named for George II of England, Georgia is the biggest state in land area east of the Mississippi. Long regarded as a leading agricultural state, Georgia’s thriving industries and size have earned it the nickname, ” The Empire State of the South.” Georgia is also known for two of its sons, Jimmy Carter, former governor of Georgia, and 39th, President of the United States, and Martin Luther King Jr., recipient of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Ornaments in this collector series were stamped with an identifying Continental United States silhouette symbol. An edition number was also printed in the symbol which permanently documents which issue the item is in the series. Since the coins and ornament were issued in the order states were admitted to the union, the edition number also corresponds with the states admission number.
