
50 STATE QUARTERS™ In a unique celebration of history and national pride, the United States Mint in 1999 began the 50 State Quarters Program. Each year the Mint will issue five new commemorative quarters honoring each of the 50 states in the order they entered the Union. These special quarters will be minted both in Philadelphia and Denver. On the coins’ reverse will be unique designs central to each state’s heritage. Hallmark American Spirit Collection ornaments will be offered for all five state quarters issued by the Mint in 1999. These include Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, and Connecticut. NEW JERSEY QUARTER Issued May 1999 A rendering of George Washington’s famous 1776 crossing of the Delaware River is the design featured on the New Jersey quarter dollar, the third issued by the United States Mint in its 50 State Quarter Program. The design, based on the 1851 painting by Emanuel Leutze, pictures Washington on Christmas Day leading his army on a surprise attack against the British and Hessian mercenaries mercenaries encamped at Trenton. Underneath the picture on the coin the words, “Crossroads of the Revolution.” are printed. The first-strike ceremony for the New Jersey quarter was held on May 3, 1999 at the Philadelphia Mint. The symbols on the ornament signify New Jersey’s important place in American history. Baseball scene: The first organized baseball game was played in Hoboken in 1846. Located between York City and Philadelphia, New Jersey played a key role during the American Revolution. Two of its cities, Princeton and Trenton, even served as temporary national capitals. Named for the Isle of Jersey, in the English Channel, New Jersey is known today for its wide industrial diversification and as a popular tourist destination. Perhaps its prettiest landmark is the Statue of Liberty, which is been referred to as America’s greatest symbol of freedom. Ornaments in this collector series were stamped with an identifying Continental United States silhouette symbol.
