CONNECTICUT QUARTER

Issued October 1999

Over 100 years before the Declaration of Independence, Connecticut was granted the charter from King Charles II to form an independent government. Later, when James II demanded the surrender of the charter, Captain Joseph Wadsworth bravely hid it inside a majestic white oak. Called the “Charter Oak,” it is a fitting symbol of Connecticut’s spirit of independence. The quarter is the fifth issued by the United States Mint in the 50 State Quarters Program.

The first strike ceremony for the Connecticut quarter was held in October, 1999 at the Philadelphia Mint.
