50 STATE QUARTERS™ In a unique celebration of history and national pride, the United States Mint in 1999 began the 50 State Quarters Program™. Each year the mint will issue five new commemorative quarters honoring each of the 50 states in the order they entered the Union. Also included are the state’s outline and a star that represents Colombia as the state capitol. This quarter is the eighth issued by the United States Mint in its 50 State Quarters Program. The ceremonial launch for the South Carolina quarter was held on May 26, 2000 at Dutch Fork Elementary School in Irmo. Many of the important battles in the Revolutionary War in America took place in South Carolina. It was also in South Carolina that the first shots were fired in the Civil War. Today, South Carolina is one of America’s most popular tourism destinations with visitors drawn by the state’s colonial heritage, noted architecture, beautiful beaches, and numerous golf courses.
