Mark McGwire became Home Run King in 1998 when he powered the ball out of the park for the 70th time in one season-surpassing season rival Sammy Sosa (66) and the legendary Roger Maris (61) and Babe Ruth (60).  In 1999, the popular first baseman became only the 16th player in history to hit 500 homers.  “When I get in that box, I’m totally focused,” he says.

Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals July 31, 1997, by the Oakland Athletics, McGwire was the A’s first-round choice in the 1984 free-agent draft. An AL All-Star for nine seasons, he was also a member of the 1984 USA Olympic baseball team and was College Player of the Year the same year.

A different baseball star is featured in this series each year.
