Yes, Virginia, there really was a Santa Claus!

His name was Nicholas and he was a Christian bishop who lived during the 4th Century in Asia Minor. His parents, wealthy and devout Christians themselves, died when he was a young boy, leaving him a sizeable inheritance.

Although he is associated with many legends and miracles, Nicholas is best remembered for his benevolent generosity, especially with children.

The most frequently told story concerns a local nobleman with three daughters who had lost his fortunes in poor business ventures. In those days it was essential that any woman who desired to marry, possess an ample dowry. Knowing this, Nicholas made secret, nocturnal visits to their house when each daughter came of marriageable age. Each time he threw a bag of gold through the window. (One of the bags was supposed to have actually landed in a stocking that was hanging by the fireplace to dry!) And, of course, all three daughters became happily married.

The legend of his kind generosity lived on through the centuries and spread to Europe. When the Dutch sailed to the New World in 1630, a figurehead of St. Nicholas graced their ship.

The modern image of Santa Claus we know today is uniquely American in origin, created from a combination of Dutch and English traditions, 19th Century cartoon characterizations, and even the timeless verse displayed on this puzzle.

Yet what is important is not so much the image that exists, but the spirit that lives. And the question of whether there really is a Santa Claus must truly be answered “Yes.” Because the kindness and generosity of a man called Nicholas has endured and grown for over 1600 years.

This spirit lives on today … in the hearts and minds and dreams of children all over the world.

Thank you, St. Nick.
