History buffs and movie fans alike love the General! During the Civil War, the original locomotive was captured by Union  soldiers deep in Confederate territory then retaken by the Confederates after à thrilling 87-mile chase. LIONEL® offered the General in the 1950s, and its saga was retold in the film The Great Locomotive Chase (1956).
