An outstanding athlete at UCLA, where he played baseball, basketball, and football, Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson was the first African American to play in the modern major leagues-and the first elected to the Hall of Fame™ (1962). Admired for his aggressive style of play and team leadership, he was Rookie of the Year (1947) and NL MVP (1949). His lifetime batting average was .311.
