All Aboard for a Magical Ride

Experiencing the Santa’s Magic Train Keepsake Ornament is like taking a trip back to your favorite childhood Christmas. As a “master elf” in Hallmark’s workshop, Ken Crow lights up when talking about this magical scene.

“What I’m trying to recreate is that feeling of the little kid at Christmas,” he says. “I want to bring back that really happy, warm family moment where they’re the most special person and they’re getting a gift from someone.”

Featuring Toymaker Santa, this ornament combines Ken’s artistry with the stories that shine brightly in his memory.”My dad got my brother and me a train set when we were kids, and this ornament’s got the feeling of my dad giving us that present,’ Ken says. “A lot of these things have this connected feeling of family and friends and the great people in your life. That’s what I try to put into my work.”

Even if some of us didn’t get everything we wished for at Christmas, Ken likes to make ornaments that make that dream possible.

“If you really wanted to have a great big train set but you never got it, through Keepsakes you get to have a little version of it after all.”

Ken worked with engineers Ron Carlson and Jean Newton to literally make all the bells and whistles as enchanting as he imagined them.

“I like coming up with an answer to what the artist would like the product to do. I like the challenge of solving a puzzle,” Jean says. “My job is to nurture it all the way up to where we’d like it to go.”

Ken loves being on a team that challenges him to go above and beyond, and he credits Product Manager Charles Young with helping him see all the possibilities.

“When we start a project, Charles will go, ‘Ken, don’t limit yourself. What’s the greatest thing you can create?”

Complexity paired with creativity is what makes Ken thrive. He says Santa’s Magic Train is like a movie.

“it’s got writers, musicians, a script, characters, props, lighting and sound effects, mood and color.”

Above all, the most important feature is how it makes people feel.

“My whole goal is to pluck a heartstring and make somebody happy,” Ken says.

NOTE:

  • Information on box and Dream Book indicates: “Train moves to the tune of ‘Jolly Old St. Nicholas.'” Corrected information: Train moves to the tune of “Here Comes Santa Claus.”
