The Legend of The Easter Bunny My mother first told me the legend of the Easter Bunny when I was a young child in Holland. She said that if you see a little bunny rabbit out in nature standing on his hind legs, you can be sure that he is practicing a stance for carrying an Easter egg basket on his back. And when he runs away into the bushes nearby, he’s hurrying off to decorate Easter eggs. On Easter morning, he’ll hide a nest of colorful eggs in every child’s garden. When I think back to the exciting egg hunts of my childhood, I can still see the Easter Bunny painting and hiding the eggs. There was so much to it, a rich tradition truly living in your fantasy. And what you believe is true, is really true, when you are four or eight…or sixty! I remember making numerous Easter drawings when I was a child. The Easter Bunny appearing under my pencil, carefully made–painting his eggs, then carrying them away in his wicker basket with leather straps on his back. Year after year, I relived that wonderful story my mother once told me, and even now, when Easter time is coming, I can’t wait to draw another Easter Bunny, just like when I was five. As soon as my brush touches the paper, I can see the Easter Bunny hiding his eggs. And in my imagination, I can see him suddenly listen…wait…then a soft peep-peep and a crack–he was too slow delivering his eggs, and now a sweet, newly hatched chick will accompany him on his Easter deliveries! We all need stories, fairy tales, and wonders to feed our imaginations. So many wonderful things in the world wouldn’t happen without our make–believe.
