NERDY NUGGET: A baker’s dozen is not actually a dozen at all. Rather, it is 13, which is one more than a dozen. This is thought to have originated in ancient Egypt, where bakers cheating their patrons out of hard-earned food was met with harsh consequences – usually, their ear nailed to their door to let people know they were a rip-off. To get around ever being accused of cheating the system, bakers would simply throw in an extra piece of baked goods to make their customers happy.
