By common usage, stein is referred to as being a beer container with a handle and a hinged lid. Around the 14th century the spread of the bubonic plague throughout Europe forced Germany to take some precautions, so a law was written starting that all beverage containers needed a lid. Today steins are collected for their artistry. Keepsake artist Tom Best was inspired by beer steins throughout the world to create this festive North Pole scene. A beer aficionado himself, Tom wanted to celebrate the brewing process by featuring the elf brewmaster.
