From the Vault: Three Little Angels

For this holiday season, Hallmark artists and writers designed more than 1300 new ways to say Merry Christmas. But, it is safe to say – none of these fresh offerings will be as popular as Three Little Angels.

Three Little Angels is the best-selling Christmas card in Hallmark’s history –and perhaps greeting card history –as it was sent 36 million times (and counting!) since its introduction in 1977. Three Little Angels has been an enormous success because its design is delightful with a touch of the mischievous. The card could be portraying three actual angels or three children dressed as angels for a Christmas pageant. It also has perfect balance –both visually and verbally. The sentiment of three little wishes corresponds beautifully with the design of three little angels. Many people consider it their special Christmas card, and send it out year after year, including its original creators, retired Hallmark Artist Ruth Morehead and retired Hallmark Writing Stylist Bobbie Burrow. The initial design concept -three little angels, one with opened eyes and a drooping halo -came from a memory of a childhood photograph featuring Ruth and her twin sisters. “We were three little towheads, and one was always the mischievous one—but I won’t say which one,” Ruth recalled. The sentiment -“God bless you, love you, keep you…at Christmas time and always” -was also inspired by personal experiences. “I thought about what little angels would say if they could speak, and then about what my children might say at the end of a Christmas pageant,” Bobbie said. Through the years, Three Little Angels has changed only in size, some years larger and some years smaller than its present 5-by-7-inch dimensions. The most recent version, which is currently available as a boxed card set, has bright, fresh colors and glitter. Although the core design and sentiment have remained the same for four decades, it has inspired countless Hallmark artists to recreate it and incorporate angels of different ethnicity, representing their loved ones, in recent years. Several of these designs have also appeared on gift wrap, home décor, and ornaments, much to the delight of card shoppers who think of Three Little Angels as part of their Christmas traditions.
