Merry Bakers spice up Christmas Wouldn’t an extra hand in the kitchen be a nice Christmas treat? This year, Keepsake Ornaments is bringing you the next best thing: a visit from the Merry Bakers. Feast your eyes on eight of the handiest kitchen fairies you’ll ever meet, all fresh from the imaginations of Keepsake sculptors Tammy Haddix and Sue Tague. One look at this line of 2006 ornaments—complete with its own collection stand—and you’ll almost taste the sweet, sugary frosting of Christmas cookies. “We think of them like the shoemaker’s elves,” Tammy says, referring to the classic Brothers Grimm folk tale. “They sneak in at night when no one’s watching, and they make every cake and cookie perfect—without any hassle for us!” Tammy, who’s been with Hallmark for 18 years, and Sue, a 42-year veteran of Hallmark’s creative staff, started creating the line in early 2005. They each were assigned to a design collection project for Keepsake Ornaments, and Tammy offered her idea for “some little baking fairies” as a starting point for their inspiration. Equally inspiring to the process was Tammy’s mother, Cheri Elder of Kansas City, Mo., who has baked creative cakes an cookies since Tammy was a child. “We grew up with Mom using those figure-shaped cake pans and star tips for frosting,” she remembers and laughs. “Now she makes gingerbread houses with my boys at the holidays, but they come home with tummy aches from eating all of the candies they’re supposed to be decorating with!” The Merry Bakers began life as sketches by Tammy and Sue, who also created a story to go along with the characters. Each one represents a specific step in the baking process. The two evenly divided their sculpting work on the line. Sue created Snicker & Doodle, Whisk and Dollop as well as the Santa hat and tree pastries, while Tammy brought to life Dusty & Smidgen, Hugh, Sprinkle and the treats shaped like a snowman and a Christmas present. Part of the fun for them was to add the many details that reflect each character’s personality, such as Dusty’s flour-sifter hat, Dollop’s cupcake-foil collar and the hat that looks like the lid from a food-coloring dropper for Hugh. Tammy and Sue hope the Merry Bakers bring fun to homes all over—and not just for the holidays. “We made the Merry Bakers to be fun for the kitchen all year long,” Sue says and laughs. “We hope people enjoy them as much as we do.” Reprint of: “Merry Bakers spice up Christmas,” For Keeps: Volume 5, Issue 1, Spring 2006”
