For Keepsake Artist Robert Hurlburt, Hallmark began as a family affair—his brother helped bring him into company. “He and I knew that we wanted to do something creative rather than what our family traditionally did, which was working in an industrial trade,” he says. What Robert brought with him from that background is the technical eye he uses to scrutinize each of his creations.

Rylan and Sadie

“As most KOC members know, I usually try to be inspired by my boys and what they are into. Although they were never into comic books, I found out that fellow Keepsake Artist Jake Angell’s son, Rylan, is really into them. My first idea was to have Rylan design a comic book for me to use in this piece. He was going to do it, but right after talking to Jake about it, it was discovered that Rylan’s cancer had come back and he was going to need treatment. Rylan was diagnosed in 2015 with a tumor on the nerve of his eye. He has been such a brave boy, and I see him as a super hero. Since he wasn’t able to create a cover for me, I designed the comic the little boy is reading to be about Rylan and his dog, Sadie. I also sculpted the little boy’s face to look like Rylan.”

And the watchful observer just might recognize an old friend on next year’s ornament. “Since my pet shop window ornament, I’ve always included a little spaniel dog. And I’ve always wanted to create the scene of a boy getting a small ice cream cone for the dog! This sweet dog is his best friend, just like my Baxter, our labradoodle, is for my boys.” Tammy hopes next year’s window brings back fond memories of the ice cream shops of yesteryear. “I sure know I was craving ice cream as I sculpted it!”
