Jim turned an ordinary chicken egg into a festive frog and won first place. The fifth in the Marjolein’s Garden series, it’s particularly meaningful because Jim has kindly taken in many animals over the years, even raising blue jays. He once found a stranded baby blue jay after a storm and carried it back to his studio.

“While I worked,” Jim says, “that little bird would play. He’d fly back and forth, pick up a paintbrush and take off with it. “When the bird moved to the outdoors, I’d walk out in the morning to get the paper, and he’d fly over and sit on my shoulder.”
