THE LEGEND OF THE FIRST
CHRISTMAS TREE LIGHTS

One winter evening many centuries ago
while passing through the snowy German woods,
Martin Luther found himself lost.
After praying for comfort and guidance,
he looked up and noticed the millions
of beautiful twinkling stars overhead.
He realized that just as God had sent a star
to guide the wise men that first Christmas,
God would surely be there
to guide his way that night.

Upon arriving home, Luther was greeted
by his family decorating their Christmas tree.
He told then the story of how God’s twinkling stars
had encouraged him as he tried to find
his way home in the night.
To remind them all of God’s light
shining through the darkness,
he took the candles from the candelabra nearby
and fastened them to the branches of the tree.
And ever since then, shining lights have adorned
our beloved Christmas trees,
filling our homes with the warmth and the glow
of the Light of the world.

THE LEGEND OF
THE GINGERBREAD HOUSE

A generous baker gave away so many cakes
and cookies one Christmas Eve
that by the end of the day, he had only empty
shelves and a full heart to show for it.
Sadly, he realized he couldn’t afford to buy
presents for his family. Then the baker got an idea.
Gather every broken cookie.
piece of gingerbread, slice of sugarplum,
and dab of frosting he had left,
he built a gingerbread house. It wasn’t much,
he thought, but it was all he had. Leaving the shop
with his creation, the baker met a stranger
who exclaimed at its exquisiteness
and wished to buy it. Pressing a bag of coins
into the baker’s hand. The stranger thanked him,
took the gingerbread house,
and vanished into the evening mist.
In the bag, the astonished baker found more than
enough money to buy gifts for his family.
News of the first gingerbread house quickly spread.
Creating the Christmas confection
became tradition, and today it is said that
those who make a gingerbread house
will encounter kindness and prosperity
throughout the coming year.
