The Story of
THE NATIVITY

The young carpenter, Joseph, was worried as they
approached the little town of Bethlehem.
His wife, Mary, was great with child and she needed a place to rest.
Bethlehem was a poor town and there was only one inn.
With hope in his heart, Joseph went to seek lodging,
but when he returned, he was downcast and sad.
“There’s no room for us, Mary,” he said softly,
“We’ll have to stay in the stable tonight.”
“Don’t worry, Joseph,” she said,
“any place we lay our heads will be home.”
That very night the child was born in the stable, and the babe
was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger.
O that night full of miracles, the stable was transformed
into a holy place, a sacred shrine.
The straw of the manger began to gleam like gold,
and even the stars were bending closer to see the newborn King.
Out of poverty came the greatest wealth,
the richest treasure, and the highest hope.
And the child who had only a manger for a cradle,
would one day cradle all the world.

St. Nicholas and
The First Christmas Stocking

Nicholas was a kindly man born in the
fourth century. Because he devoted his life
to helping others and doing good deeds, he
became a bishop at a young age. One year at
Christmastime, Nicholas was told of a poor
villager whose wife had died. The man was so
grief-stricken that he was unable to care for
his three daughters. When Nicholas heard of
their desperate situation, he rode past their
humble cottage and tossed three bags of
gold through their window. The gold scattered
and landed in the girls’ stockings that were
hung by the chimney to dry. ‘This is a miracle,”
cried the eldest daughter. “Now we will be able
to buy food and wood
and nurse our father back to health.”
Once this story was heard across the land,
the custom evolved of children hanging stockings
by the chimney, in hopes that St. Nicholas
would bring them happy Christmas surprises.

The Legend of
THE SHEPHERD BOY

The shepherd boy was very poor,
he had no gold to bring,
but there was one thing he might give
to Christ, the Newborn King.

Inspired by love, he brought a gift
he treasured more than gold–
a little lamb he’d found
without a mother, lost and cold.

The boy held up his heart’s delight
before the Holy Child
and at the sight of such a gift,
the Baby Jesus smiled.

Oh, there were gleaming treasures
meant to bring the infant joy…
but none as perfect as the lamb
brought by the shepherd boy.
