Don Palmiter

Nostalgic Houses and Shops

Don Palmiter, who started his career as an artist at Hallmark fresh out of high school in 1967, believes that Keepsake Ornaments are like time capsules. Every time he holds one, it whisks him back to a special time in his life that he wants to treasure. Don isn’t alone- his nostalgic, retro-themed cars and houses are considered preserved pieces of time by enthusiasts all over the world.

Don Palmiter

Known from an early age as “that kid who could draw,” Tom Best seemed destined to become an artist. What started as doodles and sketches for his friends and classmates eventually led to more masterful works of art, always intended to make someone smile. Now a pillar of the Hallmark Keepsake Studio, Tom has happily evolved into “that guy who makes ornaments.

NERDY NUGGET: The first Mustang was released in 1964 in a frenzy of fanaticism. Simultaneous ads aired on major network TV the night before release, bringing huge crowds to dealerships.

In Dallas, 15 customers vied for the same car, one of them spending the night in it to stake his claim. The Mustang was a legend in the making.

The original Mustang borrowed its foundation from the Ford Falcon, but the mile-long hood and short rear deck gave it a style all its own. The concept was a team effort, with Ford’s three design groups competing for the winning proposal.

From concept to production, the Mustang–the first in a long line of American pony cars–was born in a mere 18 months. A year and a half later, more than a million would be on the road.

The Mustang served as the pace car for the 1964 Indy 500 and appeared in the movie Goldfinger (1964).

NERDY NUGGET: The last of the legendary “tri-five” Chevrolets, the ’57 Bel-Air was arguably the brightest and best of the bunch. Chrome hood rockets and headlight bezels set the stage, but the wide grille and iconic matching tailfins were the true stars. The gas cap was hidden in the left rear fender, and the owner’s manual gave directions for cleaning, white wall tires–a true sign of the times.

Chevrolet introduced fuel injection in ’57 along with the Super Turbo–Fire 283. This small-block V8 engine was marked with a gold “V” on the hood. The Bel-Air’s power and relatively light weight made it a success as a hot rod. It won 49 Grand National races, the most in NASCAR history. Most memorable was the 2-door 150 sedans, known as Black Widows, which were the first cars banned by NASCAR for being unbeatable.

Lights, Music, Magic!
Sound-A-Light technology creates a unique light show for every song and sound of the season.

Everyone has their favorite Christmas songs, and everyone loves the magic of Christmas lights. Now we’ve combined the two with Sound-A-Light.

“This technology is all about, ‘How do we get decorations and lights to respond to the music we play?’ ” says Engineer Phu Dang.

Each piece of immersive technology puts on a spectacular light show based on preloaded music or by listening and reacting to the music you play nearby.

Or, if you prefer a calmer kind of light show, each piece can also shine a continuous glow without sound.

This year, we’re adding a wreath and two tabletop pieces to the Sound-A-Light collection. Use them individually or all at once to see a coordinated show that’s guaranteed to give you a Christmas filled with light, color and sound like you’ve never seen before!
