The Legend of the
LITTLE STAR

Thousands of years ago there was a very little star,
so small in fact that no one even kew it was there.
Oh, the other stars knew. But the little star’s light
was so faint compared to theirs
that they ignored it completely.
But the little star kept shining and hoping and dreaming.
Then, one winter night, an angel came o the star
with glad and unexpected tidings.
“On this night you will shine brighter than all the others.
And you will lead three Wise Men to Bethlehem
where a miraculous Child has been born.”
“But, why me?” asked the little star.
“I am no more than a tiny spark in the great night.”
“Yes,” said the angel. “But you are a spark
that can never be extinguished. You are a spark
of faith and joy and love.
And the memory of your light will guide all humankind
through all the nights, forever.”

The Legend of the
Christmas Bells

In a small village on Christmas Eve, an old woman sighed,
blew out her candle, and climbed into bed.
For the first time in her long life, the bell of the village church
would not ring at midnight to herald Christmas,
for the bell and its tower had been damaged in a storm.
The old woman lay sleeplessly in her bed for a long time,
and just as she was finally drifting off,
she was roused by a clamor outside.
She arose and opened her front door to see what it could be.
Parading down the road was the church’s pastor,
followed by several of the village’s children,
ringing bells with all the exuberance in their young hearts.
Other doors began to open, lamps were lit,
and weary faces turned to smiles
as the villagers took in the lively procession before them.
But no one was more delighted than the old woman,
who was sure that, in all her years,
the ringing of the bells had never sounded so sweet.

THE LEGEND OF THE
Christmas Nightingale

Everything was ready in the stable for the arrival
of the Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve.
Mary had lovingly filled the manger with the softest hay
that Joseph could find as they awaited the birth of their son.
When the Baby arrived,
Mary began softly cooing as she rocked Him.
Soon the birds roosting in the rafters began singing as well,
creating a comforting lullaby for the newborn.
But a little brown bird at the edge of the manger wasn’t singing.
He knew that when he opened his beak all that would
come out was a raspy chirp.
So he just sat quietly listening to the others.
Suddenly a multitude of angels filled the sky and began singing
the glorious announcement of the blessed birth!
When the sparrows, doves, and robins joined the chorus,
the small bird so wanted to be a part of the celebration.
Wonder of wonders, when he opened his beak this time,
his voice was the sweetest and most musical of all!
Ever since, the nightingale has been known
for his lovely signature song,
a melody so beautiful that all who hear it feel
the joy of that first Christmas night.
