The Legend of “Silent Night” On December 23, 1818, in the tiny Austrian village of Oberndorf,
Father Joseph Mohr discovered that the pipe organ
at St. Nicholas Church had quit working.
Hungry mice had nibbled a hole in the organ’s bellows.
On his long walk home.
he wondered how he would provide music
for the Christmas Eve services the next day.
As he prayed for an answer, he paused on a hilltop overlooking
his serene snow-covered village.
The quiet beauty below reminded him of a poem he’d written.
That poem could be the perfect hymn–
if only he could find another musical instrument!
The next day, Father Josef visited with the church organist Franz Gruber.
Franz agreed to compose a melody for the pome on his guitar,
and he would do it before that very evening.
That night, a hush fell over the church
as Gruber and Father Joseph began singing
“Silent Night, Holy Night.”
The angelic voices of the children’s choir soon joined in the chorus.
The humble accompaniments of the guitar
and the simple words of the song
perfectly described that first Christmas Eve so long ago.
Nearly two centuries later, “Silent Night” is sung all over the world
to welcome the Holy Father
and echo the heavenly peace He brings to all.
