The Legend of In the stable behind the crowded inn at Bethlehem,
THE CARDINAL
a gray bird perched on a rafter just under the roof.
The warmth of the animals and the sweet fragrance
of hay created a little haven, not only for the bird
but also for a small family huddled in the stall below.
As the father stood watch and the mother
cradled her newborn, the night wind whirled
colder and colder.  The baby began to cry.
The little bird, who had often visited the weaver’s
to find good nest-making material, knew just what to do.
Off he flew, returning with a bright red cloak woven
of the softest lamb’s wool, which he gently let fall
right over the baby in his mother’s arms.
Warm at last, the Baby Jesus slept.
And the cardinal was rewarded with a scarlet cloak
of his own to wear forever.
